Tyler Stenson at the Outlaw Roadshow
While sitting at dinner last night, I received a phone call from an unknown East Coast number — for the first time in my life, this was a most welcomed interruption. Instantly, my eyes darted wide at my girlfriend and all at once, she knew it too — it was the call I had been waiting for.
Upon answering, I was greeted by Ryan Spaulding and although I pretty much blacked-out at that point (due to nerves), I remember him telling me that he and Adam Durtiz had made their final decision … out of 3,594 total artist submissions, I was selected to perform in The Outlaw Roadshow at SxSW in Austin, TX. See you there!

I’m not sure I can communicate how much this means to me. Sure, it’s the culmination of a month of grueling promotion and fan wrangling but further, it’s the marked achievement of a dream — a dream I’ve dreamed all along this musical road that will finally come true.
You see, Adam Duritz (of Counting Crows) has always been my absolute biggest musical influence and idol, hands-down and bar-none. Because he has had such an immeasurable impact on my craft, delivery, lyrics and overall career, I’ve always put it atop my bucket list to meet the man, shake his hand and tell him Thank you.
AND I’M NOT JUST SAYING THIS BECAUSE HIS NAME IS ON THIS EVENT!!!
No, a couple months ago I spoke at a middle school assembly and when a student asked me, “Who is one person you’d like to meet that you haven’t yet?” … my response was, “If he exists, Jesus, otherwise, I’d like to sit down to dinner with Adam Duritz.”
Though that probably won’t happen (but the invitation is open), I’ll just take great pride in knowing that my lovely fans banded together to vote me into the Top 10 and that Ryan Spaulding and my biggest hero of all, whose opinions matter most to me, hand-selected me as the finalist. What a trip.
See you in Austin.
