As I’ve been creating this new album, I’ve taken the time to roughly record the tracks, so that I can listen back and critique the work from an outside perspective. Always live, raw and unpolished, here is another song that is being developed for the upcoming album; The Nest.
A song about my wife and me battling the ferocious Portland real estate market, The Nest is a reminder of what’s important in life. We felt homeless and hopeless (at the time) and although I wanted desperately to be the provider, giving her everything we hoped for and more, our offers were being outbid and my songs weren’t putting us in a position to compete.
In the end, we could only lean on each other for strength. Living on love, right?
And that we did. We loved our way through it and came out alive and well, with a cute little Nest to show for it.
THE NEST

Baby, it seems
Like this city has outgrown us
And put us out in the sticks
With the dogs and the dirt and the leaves.
But Honey,
If Home is where the heart is,
Then we’re right where we need to be:
Just you and me-
Two birds on a branch of a tree,
With roots grown deep as the sea.
Baby, I know it’s not what you wanted,
Hanging out in the middle,
Somewhere between the street and the stars.
But if it’s this or the cage of City Man’s wage,
Then I guess we’ll get some use from these wings.
Yeah, you and me-
Two birds on a branch of a tree,
With roots grown deep as the sea.
Little birds on a limb,
Caught up in the wind,
Oh, it’s hard to win.
But, you can trace a little line
Back to the pine and down
To the ground.
If that’s what you want,
I can make it happen,
Because all I ever wanted was to see you
Smile like the star that you are.
But, if you believe my songs
Will one day catch on,
Then let us do what we do and sing.
Yeah, you and me-
Two birds on a branch of a tree,
With roots grown deep as the sea.
