A new fan approached me at a recent gig and asked for my signature on the event concert poster. Of course, I happily complied because I’m honest enough to admit that signing schwag is still a significant rush for me. It never gets old.
After talking with the new fan further, I discovered that he was going to put this poster on his wall in a space that pays tribute to his favorite artists; however, because there were only three frames available, I learned that he was going to remove his Ben Harper poster and add mine in its place.
This was the result…
Now, I need to make the disclaimer that my snarky comment scribed on the poster was written in complete jest. Although I’ve never been shy about my competitive nature, I assure you, hearing absurd gestures like this is absolutely ground shaking … and nothing I take for granted.
If anything, despite my comment, it increases my humility.
To know that someone considers you on the level with Brett Dennen and Ray LaMontagne, artists that I very much look up to, is a little victory that has me laughing in a “pinch me” kind of way. It’s a dream come true to know that SOMEONE looks to you as an influence and has chosen to put your poster up in place of an all-time great like Ben Harper (an artist that deeply inspired my direction as a young singer/songwriter).
All of this is … well, it’s just a surreal comedy.
